Talk About It
The Beatles are not a “just the hits” kind of band. You cannot order just the “best of” album and be done with the Fab Four. In fact, I believe many of their greatest tracks were not their number one hits but were their more adventurous tracks like “Tomorrow Never Knows.”
To really understand The Beatles legendary music you have to listen to their CDs as a whole instead of simply checking out the greatest hits. I believe that The Beatles created quite a few of the top rock albums of all time and even their lesser albums (such as 1963’s With The Beatles) have a few fantastic tracks.
This is why I think it is such a marvelous idea to Buy The Beatles in Stereo Box Set. The set includes every single album (and every single song on the Past Masters CDs) that the band released during the 60s.
It includes pretty much all of their CDs except for The Anthologies and the Live at the BBC set. This seems right to me since those releases are not included as a part of the band’s “official catalog”. They are more like the “special features” on a DVD while the original releases are the main film.
Actually, there are a few more of their releases that are not included, one of them being the 1999 release of Yellow Submarine Songtrack that is completely different from the 1969 Yellow Submarine album. It is actually much better in my opinion and worth hearing for it’s different mixes (it’s actually remixed, not just remastered.) Love and Let It Be… Naked are also not included.
With The Beatles Stereo Box Set, I recommend that you Buy The Beatles Mono Box Set which features the the mono versions of their albums up through The White Album. It’s hard to really understand in the context of today, but when the “Fab Four” were putting their music to tape they considered the mono version to be of much more importance than the stereo versions up until around the time of The White Album.
