Bridgend is a town situated in South Wales, its name in welsh is Pen-y-bont. The town’s name comes originally from the bridge that crossed the River Ogmore but the River Ewenny also passes through the town. Bridgend historically developed as a market town conveniently situated between the cities of Swansea in the West and Cardiff in the East. Over recent years due to transport links the town has grown dramatically. There are direct rail links to London. Cardiff International airport is approximately thirty minutes away by car and there are excellent road links with the town being in very close proximity of the M4 motorway. As such the Town has continued to grow in terms of population.
The business and industrial areas of Bridgend has also seen substantial expansion over the past 30 years or so. Again, this can be greatly attributed to its geographical location and transport infra-structure. Bridgend has a number of industrial estates and there are businesses of all sizes in the area.
There are a number of very large companies with a presence in Bridgend including; Ford which has an engine plant in Bridgend, Biomet and Logica. Until a few years ago electronics giants Sony had two factories in the Bridgend area, however these operations have been dramatically scaled back to a small presence in just one factory. There are a large and varied number of smaller companies occupying the industrial estates, including heavy manufacturing, light manufacturing, mechanical services, electronics, repairs, recycling and printing sectors.
