In order to save money when you are updating your kitchen you just need to use a little creativity. I am going to teach you how to reface your kitchen cabinets. There are several ways you can do this project, you can choose to paint or stain your cabinets. I will take you step by step through this do it yourself project.
This is a project you can do yourself all you just need a little bit of experience painting. The first step is taking down all the cabinet doors and hinges. You just need a regular screwdriver to take the cabinet doors down. After you get them down, take them to a ventilated area, because you will be painting them. Always remember to number each cabinet door so you will know where the door is supposed to go when you put it back up again.
Take the cabinet doors and place them on old tables or on the ground with paint proof floor cover. Next on the list is to sand the doors with a sander or by hand. Using the sander will make the job go quicker. The reason you sand the cabinets and the frames is that you are giving the surface tooth. Tooth means that you are roughing up the surface so that the paint will have something to stick to when it had dried. This is the most important thing you can do in the whole project.
You have done the hardest work, which is sanding the surfaces. Do not forget to sand the frames of the cabinets as well. You will need to go to the hardware store and purchase primer and the paint color you wish to use. It is very important to use primer first on the cabinets, it is a stain blocker and makes for a nice smooth white surface on which to paint the color on. It only takes one coat of primer then you can paint with the color paint of your choice.
You will need to wipe the cabinet doors and frames down before priming them. Wiping the surfaces down will get all the dirt off. In the end you will have a better looking paint job when you are finished. You have your choice of painting tools, you have the small roller or the paint brush. Both work equally well however if you use the roller you will not have brush strokes showing in the paint.
Now that all the surfaces are sanding and cleaned it is time for the cabinets to receive the primer coat. Paint all the cabinets with the primer and give it time to dry, at least three or four hours. The next step is painting the color of your choice on the cabinets. It will take two complete coats of paint. Make sure the paint dries completely between coats. You can do small touch up painting after the paint had dried if it is necessary.
In order to update the hinges and the cabinet knobs you could simply spray paint them with a new metallic color. They will look like brand new pieces. You will need to spray paint it twice for good paint coverage. You can buy new hinges and knobs, but you need to know that they can be quite pricey.
Now I have given you step by step instructions on how to reface your cabinet doors for very little money. If you are doing the project yourself, you are saving the money on labor to have someone else do the work for you. When you are finished painting your cabinets, your entire kitchen will look brand new. It is amazing what a little bit of paint can do for a kitchen.
